Migration from classic .NET to Modern ASP.NET site

21 FEB 2019

Classic .NET to Modern ASP.NET site

Client

The client is one of the largest commercial Real Estate services and investment firm in North America

Clients concocted a thought

The Client have a real estate software application built on Windows 2000 server and  were interested in migrating their legacy application to the latest versions. The Solution is Web Based and is built on Classic ASP, is running IIS Server on Windows 2000 server. The Solution Uses MS SQL 2000 as the DB Server. The need is for the client to lift and move the application on Windows 2012 server and later to operate on the current version of Windows Server and SQL Server.

What we proposed

The Star Knowledge Technical Team with their expertise in performing such migration did the review of the current code and found that the current application has about 200000 Lines of Code, the application uses both VB Script and JavaScript for script. It makes use of Crystal Report for reporting.

The suggest approach was to that, the current application has about 200000 Lines of Code, the application uses both VB Script and JavaScript for script. It makes use of Crystal Report for reporting.

The approach was to deploy the existing application on the Windows 2012 Server by making changes in the IIS server to enable the working of the ASP application. Once the application is deployed, the app will have to be tested end to end to make sure all the components meet the requirement. This approach will not modernize the code, it will only make the application to work on the Windows 2012 Server Environment

Results & benefits obtained

The key benefits realized by the Client as a result of the successful project include:
  • ASP.NET’s improved features enable the users with Web applications that are richer and faster than Classis ASP (Olges, 2002).
  • ASP.NET makes the process of creating and integrating Web Services easier.
  • The problem of communicating across the Internet and across corporate firewalls without resorting to proprietary solutions that require additional communications ports to be opened to external access was also resolved
